How we build every verdict

Every verdict at The Velvet Coven is built from reader reception, critical reviews and publisher information, then scored with our own Fantasy Index. We do not claim to have read every book cover to cover. Where a verdict reflects the Keeper's own reading, it says so. Where it draws on compiled reception, it says that too. No sponsored verdicts, no publisher arrangements, no ratings traded for early copies. If a book is overhyped, we say so. If a book will wreck you, we warn you first.

The Fantasy Index

Every reviewed book is scored on three gauges, each from 1 to 10: Bestial (how feral the love interest), Fatality (how lethal the world), and Forbidden (how transgressive the romance). The three scores sum to a total out of 30. The Fantasy Index is our own instrument, applied consistently across the catalogue so books can be compared like for like.

Spice levels

Each book carries a spice level from 1 to 5, reflecting the heat and explicitness of its romantic content. Chaste, emotional intensity sits at 1; explicit and frequent sits at 5. The full scale, with a worked example for every level, lives in our spice ranking guide.

Affiliate links

This site contains affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you. Affiliate relationships never influence a verdict or a score. A book can be scored harshly and still carry an affiliate link; a book can be scored highly and carry none.

Read by the Keeper

Most verdicts on this site are compiled from reader reception and critical reviews, not from a single reading. A small number of books carry a "Read by the Keeper" mark. That mark means the Keeper has read the book in full, end to end, and the verdict reflects that direct reading. It is a designation of method, not of quality: a book need not be read by the Keeper to be reviewed, scored, or recommended.
