Star ratings flatten everything. Carmilla and Dark Lover could both be four stars — one is a slow gothic dread that unfolds across 130 pages of Victorian restraint, the other opens with a vampire warrior executing an assassin in a nightclub. A rating that puts them in the same bucket has told you nothing useful.
So we score every book in the coven on the three fantasies that actually drive this genre.
Raw physical power. The hero who cannot be contained by ordinary rules — the beast, the warlord, the thing that should not be tamed.
Impossible stakes. Doomed love, mortal timers, and the sense that wanting this person might cost everything.
Transgression. The thrill of a story that goes somewhere you would never go yourself, and lets you come back.
Each gauge runs from 0 to 10, for a maximum of 30. A high total does not mean a better book — it means a more intense one. Carmilla scores 22 and is a masterpiece. Use the number to choose your mood, not your standards.
